My Entire Beauty Routine Fails Every Monsoon — Until I Finally Built One Specifically For Indian Rainy Season!

Every year without exception the arrival of monsoon in Gujarat dismantles my beauty routine completely! 😔

The skincare that works beautifully in winter becomes congesting in monsoon humidity! The makeup that lasts all day in summer slides off within hours in monsoon moisture! The hair that behaves reasonably through the year becomes a frizzy humidity-affected situation from June through September!

For three years I complained about this seasonal dismantling as if it were an unavoidable fact of Indian life!

Then I spent one monsoon actually building a routine designed for the specific conditions of Indian rainy season — high humidity, intermittent rain, unpredictable temperature and the specific air quality changes that come with monsoon — and discovered that monsoon beauty is entirely solvable!

Why Monsoon Specifically Challenges Indian Skin 🌧️

Indian monsoon creates a specific combination of conditions that summer and winter do not!

High ambient humidity — the moisture in air is beneficial in some ways (skin stays hydrated without as much product) but problematic in others! High humidity means products sit on skin surface rather than absorbing, heavy moisturizers become congesting and skin prone to fungal issues faces increased risk!

Fluctuating temperature — monsoon brings cool rain followed by warm humidity! Skin has to constantly adjust sebum production to changing conditions, often over-producing in response to the fluctuations!

Increased fungal and bacterial activity — warm humid conditions are ideal for microorganism growth! Skin fungal issues, scalp fungal dandruff and increased bacterial acne all peak during monsoon for many Indian girls!

Water quality changes — monsoon changes municipal water quality in many Indian cities! Slightly more mineral-laden or chemically treated water during heavy rain seasons can affect sensitive skin and hair!

The Monsoon Skincare Routine:

Cleanser change — gel to foam:

The cream and gel cleansers that work for other seasons often feel heavy in monsoon humidity! A gentle foaming cleanser removes the combination of sebum, humidity-induced congestion and environmental pollutants that monsoon brings more effectively without stripping!

I switch from my cream cleanser to a gentle foaming version every June and switch back in October!

Moisturizer change — cream to gel:

Heavy moisturizers are unnecessary in high humidity — the ambient moisture provides hydration that heavy creams then trap, causing congestion!

I switch to a lightweight gel moisturizer — hyaluronic acid gel formula works excellently — that provides the protective hydration layer without adding heaviness that monsoon skin does not need!

Adding niacinamide:

Monsoon sebum increase benefits from niacinamide more than any other season! I increase my niacinamide application to morning and evening during monsoon months!

Adding weekly salicylic acid:

The congestion that humidity creates in pores benefits from one weekly salicylic acid treatment — I use 2% salicylic acid face wash once weekly to keep pores clear!

The Monsoon Makeup Routine:

The primer is non-negotiable:

A silicone-based primer applied before foundation creates a humidity-resistant barrier! This is the single most impactful monsoon makeup change!

Switch to powder foundation or setting powder over liquid:

Powder formulas are significantly more humidity-resistant than liquid! During heaviest monsoon weeks I use a good pressed powder as primary coverage rather than liquid foundation!

Waterproof everything eye:

Monsoon humidity alone — without rain — causes non-waterproof eye products to migrate within hours! Waterproof kajal, waterproof mascara and setting powder on eye shadow are essential!

The Monsoon Hair Routine:

Anti-humidity products are worth the investment:

Anti-frizz serums containing silicone work by creating a barrier on the hair shaft that prevents humidity from penetrating and disrupting the hair's natural structure! Apply to slightly damp hair after washing!

I use a small amount of argan oil on damp hair as affordable alternative to expensive anti-frizz products!

Scalp focus during monsoon:

Humid conditions increase scalp fungal activity! I add tea tree oil to my hair oil during monsoon and shampoo with an anti-dandruff shampoo once weekly as preventive measure even when I do not have active dandruff symptoms!

Protective styles:

Braids and buns during heavy humidity days protect hair from absorbing excessive moisture from the air that causes the swelling and frizzing of hair cuticle!

The Monsoon Body Care:

Humid conditions make heavy body lotions uncomfortable — the same switch from heavy cream to light gel moisturizer applies to body!

Antiperspirant becomes genuinely important in monsoon — the humidity means you sweat more with less evaporation cooling! Good antiperspirant rather than simple deodorant during monsoon months is a practical necessity!

Foot care becomes critical during monsoon — wet footwear, puddle water and reduced footwear choices create ideal conditions for foot fungal infections! Keeping feet dry after any water exposure and applying antifungal foot powder preventively saves significant discomfort!

My Results After One Properly Adapted Monsoon:

The previous monsoon I spent four months with congested skin, sliding makeup and frizzy hair feeling that Indian weather was simply incompatible with beauty maintenance!

The first properly adapted monsoon I experienced was genuinely different — skin remained clear throughout, makeup lasted significantly longer and hair remained manageable even on high humidity days!

Indian weather is not an obstacle to beauty! It is simply a variable that requires intelligent adaptation! 🌧️
