I Dressed According To My Emotions For 30 Days — The Psychological Discovery Changed How I Shop Forever!
This experiment started as genuine curiosity and became one of the most profound self-discovery experiences of my life! 😱 I committed to tracking my emotional state every morning and choosing clothes that matched — or intentionally contradicted — my emotions!
What I discovered about the relationship between clothing, emotion and identity was something no fashion influencer had ever told me!
The Emotion-Clothing Relationship Research 🧠
Fashion psychology research at London College of Fashion found that clothing memories are among the most emotionally loaded memories humans hold! The clothes we wore during significant emotional experiences become emotionally encoded — wearing similar pieces triggers the same emotional states!
This means your wardrobe is literally an emotional archive — and pulling from it unconsciously every morning means your past emotional experiences are dressing you!
The 30 Day Experiment Structure:
Every morning I rated my emotional state (1-10 scale across anxiety, confidence, joy, energy) before choosing clothes! Then I chose clothes either matching or intentionally contradicting that state and rated the same emotions again at noon and evening!
The Most Surprising Discoveries:
Discovery 1 — Wearing Sad Clothes On Sad Days Makes You Sadder 😔
On low mood days I had been reaching for comfortable but dull clothing — grey joggers, oversized tops, nothing intentional! Tracking revealed this consistently deepened and extended low mood!
When I forced myself to wear one intentionally beautiful or meaningful piece on low days — my mood reliably improved by noon regardless of what else was happening!
Discovery 2 — Comfort Clothes Are Not Always Comforting 🤔
The clothes I described as "comfortable" often triggered anxiety when tracked carefully! One particular oversized hoodie I considered my comfort clothing was actually associated with lazy unproductive states — wearing it consistently predicted low productivity days!
True comfort clothing proved to be items that made me feel both physically comfortable AND emotionally positive — a much smaller selection than I assumed!
Discovery 3 — Aspirational Dressing Actually Works 🌟
On days I dressed as the version of myself I was aspiring to become — more confident, more put-together, more intentional — I consistently acted more like that person!
This is enclothed cognition in real life! Dress the part and your brain begins performing the part!
Discovery 4 — Emotional Wardrobe Anchors Are Real 💫
Certain pieces in my wardrobe functioned as what I came to call emotional anchors — items so strongly associated with positive experiences or states that wearing them reliably elevated mood regardless of circumstance!
For me this was a specific dupatta my grandmother gave me, a pair of earrings I wore the day I received important good news and a colour combination I had worn during a particularly joyful period!
These pieces became my emotional toolkit — worn intentionally on challenging days as reliable mood support!
Building Your Emotional Wardrobe Intentionally:
Step 1 — Identify Your Emotional Anchors 💫
Go through your wardrobe and notice which pieces carry positive emotional associations! These are your most valuable wardrobe assets regardless of their monetary value!
Step 2 — Identify Your Emotional Drains 🚫
Which pieces consistently make you feel worse when you wear them? These pieces are costing you psychological energy regardless of how much they cost monetarily! Consider releasing them!
Step 3 — Create Emotional Categories 🌈
Organize your wardrobe not just by type or colour but by emotional function!
"Confidence pieces" — worn when you need authority and assurance!
"Joy pieces" — worn when you want to feel light and happy!
"Comfort pieces" — worn when you need gentleness and self-compassion!
"Aspiration pieces" — worn when you want to grow into your best self!
Step 4 — The Intentional Morning Practice 🌅
Before opening your wardrobe each morning ask — what emotional state do I want to create today? Then dress from that intention rather than habit or convenience!
This single practice transforms getting dressed from a stressful daily task into a powerful daily ritual of intentional self-expression!
The Indian Emotional Wardrobe:
Indian clothing is inherently more emotionally charged than Western fashion because of its deep cultural and family associations!
The saree you wore at a joyful family celebration, the kurta someone who loves you gifted you, the colours associated with festivals and auspicious occasions — all carry emotional weight that Western wardrobe psychology doesn't account for!
Indian girls have access to an emotionally rich fashion vocabulary that is genuinely powerful for emotional wardrobe work!
My Shopping Forever Changed 🛍️
After this experiment I completely changed how I shop! I no longer buy anything that doesn't make me feel a genuine and specific positive emotion immediately!
No more buying because something is on sale, because others have it or because it's "supposed to" suit me! Every new piece must earn its emotional place in my wardrobe!
My wardrobe is smaller, more intentional and infinitely more powerful than it was before this experiment! 👗
